Events to Learn about Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK Day in and around Lancaster County

Dare to learn more this year about who Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was and what he stood for?  Each of these unique events, held in Lancaster County and surrounding areas, will give you and your family an opportunity to get to know Martin Luther King in an exciting new way!

Lancaster YWCA presents: Celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

WHERE: YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime Street, Lancaster, PA  17602
WHEN:  Monday January 21, 2019.

  • 10 – 11 am – for kids ages 3 to 4
  • 12:30 – 1:30 pm or 2 – 3 pm – for kids ages 5 through 12.

WHAT:  Kids of all ages will be able to make crafts relating to peace, diversity and the life of Dr. King. We will playing excerpts from his most famous speeches. Light refreshments will be served.  Registration required here.

Fredericksen Library Presents: MLK – The Man, The Myth, The Martyr

WHERE: Fredricksen Library 100 N. 19th St., Camp Hill PA 17011
WHEN: Monday January 21, 2019

  • 1:00pm recommended for 18yrs and older
  • 7:00pm recommended for all ages

WHAT:  Joseph Robinson, president of the Martin Luther King Leadership Development Institute, will delve into the layers of who Martin Luther King Jr. was beyond the surface. Discussion and a book signing will follow the presentation. No registration necessary.

Penn State Harrisburg, Mukund S. Kulkarni Theatre Presents: “Saving Ellis House”

WHERE: Mukund S. Kulkarni Theatre, 777 West Harrisburg Pike, Middletown PA 17057
WHEN: Monday, January 21, 2019 at 12:00pm
WHAT:  This FREE 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. play is a collaboration between Penn State Harrisburg and PenOwl Productions to celebrate the King holiday.

It’s 1990 and the city has taken over ownership of the Ellis house, a historic, abandoned home. The Mayor is asking: Who was Mr. Ellis? Why does the local construction company want to remodel the house or perhaps tear it down? Why does the preservation society want to leave it untouched? The real question is what mystery does the old house hold and, when it is revealed, will the answer provide the key to saving Ellis house?

Messiah College Marching in the Footsteps: Reflections on the Civil Rights Bus Tour

WHERE: Messiah College, 1 College Ave, Mechanicsburg, PA
WHEN: Thursday, January 24 from 6pm – 9pm
WHAT:

  • Panel Discussion // The Civil Rights Bus Tour provides participants with numerous opportunities to learn about the movement, hear first-person accounts, and stand in key locations from the era. Hear reflections from students and educators as they share what they drew from the tour and how they integrate their experience into their work and lives. Q&A to be included.  7-8pm, Boyer 131
  • Civil Right Bus Tour Immersion Spaces: As the tour is full of impactful moments. Come more fully experience a few of the moving words, songs, and locations. These “immersion spaces” will be available to walk through in neighboring rooms before and after the panel. 6-9pm, Boyer 130, 134, & Howe Atrium

American Visionary Art Museum Presents: MLK Dare to Dream Day

WHEN: January 21, from 10am until 6:00pm
WHERE: American Visionary Art Museum 800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD 21230
WHAT: A celebration in honor of one history‘s greatest visionaries. Join us for special performances by DewMore Baltimore, Chin-Yer Wright, Kondwani Fidel, Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, and Keur Khaleyi African Dance Company.

Plus, enjoy birthday cake, a hands-on art workshop, and more at this FREE, fun-filled day! See our latest exhibition “PARENTING: An Art without a Manual” with FREE admission all day, 10am–6pm.

First State Heritage Park – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Tours

WHEN: Monday, January 21, from 9am – 4:30pm
WHERE: First State Heritage Park, Dover Delaware
WHAT: Spend #MLKDay with the First State Heritage Park as we celebrate the #CivilRights movement and #AfricanAmerican history in #Delaware with a number of FREE programs, guided and interpretive tours and a chance to see and hear “tales of slavery” and the role Delaware played as a border state in times of slavery.
