As a parent, encouraging my children in their character development is something I strive to do every day. I verbally encourage my kids as often as possible, but in the beginning of the new year I wanted something to help reinforce the importance of their character development, so I came up with this idea!
What if I were to help myself be more diligent in character training by rewarding my kids with a character quality certificate? Just a simple way of letting them know that they’ve shown a particular character trait this week, and that’s what God desires for them!
So that’s what I started to do!
Each week, I would sit down for a few minutes and intentionally reflect on my children’s behavior the week before—what they’ve been struggling with, and what they’ve been growing in, maybe a situation they handled well with a sibling or a chore they completed all the way.
Each certificate features a character trait, a short description to go along with the trait, and a verse reminding your child that the character they’ve shown is truly what God desires for their lives. It reminds them that they’ll find great joy throughout their life as they show this character over and over again.
After I choose the character trait they exemplified, I print out the certificate and we have a little celebration. We like to present their certificates to them on Sunday evenings along with a Sunday Sundae Party (ice cream sundaes of course!) It’s a great way to enter in to a new week!
