Christmas on a Budget: A Guide to Thrift Store Christmas Shopping

I have the privilege today of sharing a guest post written by Fashion Cents Thrift store in Strasburg, PA. They have compiled an excellent guide to thrift store Christmas shopping especially for anyone shopping on a budget this holiday season!

Christmas is right around the corner!

If you’re anything like us, you love a great deal (especially around this time of year).

Christmas is an excellent opportunity to show the people in your life how much you appreciate them with a thoughtful gift. The only downside to this is the expense—the cost of gifts can add up fast. Before you know it, your credit card bill has doubled, or your savings account has completely disappeared.

To help get you into the gift-giving spirit without the budget woes, we created a guide to thrift store Christmas shopping on a budget. In this guide, you’ll find cheap Christmas gifts for everyone on your nice list.

Our first tip for doing Christmas on a budget is to start your holiday shopping spree at a thrift store. Not only can thrift stores help deal hunters like us save a ton of money on presents, but they’re also a one-stop shop when it comes to shopping for all of your friends and family.

Retail shopping requires holiday shoppers to jump from store to store because one store rarely has all the gifts you need for the different types of people in your life. For example, when retail shopping you may need to stop at a women’s clothing store like the Loft for a gift for your mom, and then drive to a toy store like Toys R Us to shop for your the kids in your life.

The great thing about thrift stores is that you can find gifts for everyone on your nice list in one stop.

Keep reading for unique gift ideas for doing Christmas on a budget—all of which you can find at a thrift store!

1. Recreate a family photo for your parents.

It’s not uncommon for parents to tell their kids not to spend any money on Christmas presents for them. “Let’s just be glad to be together over the holidays.” Sound familiar? Just because your parents don’t want you to break your budget over a Christmas present, doesn’t mean that you can’t get them a small, budget-friendly and thoughtful gift.

One of our favorite cheap Christmas gifts is surprising parents with a recreated family photo like the one below. Grab your smartphone to snap the picture, print it out, and find a double picture frame at a thrift store. It’s that cheap and easy! You can stick the old family photo side by side with the recreated photo in a double picture frame. And as you might’ve guessed, thrift stores are the perfect place to pick up like-new picture frames for awesome bargains.

2. Find you friends their favorite brands for less.

Is there a brand that the ladies in your life love but can’t afford at retail prices? Surprise your friends or even your sister with their favorite brand names for thrift store prices this Christmas.

The Lularoe ‘Julia’ Dress below was only $34.99, while retail price was $45. Consider other brands like Loft, Gap, and even Coach! Consigned purses, scarves, and jewelry are also great (and cheap) Christmas presents for when you are shopping on a budget.

3. Get children’s toys for unbelievable deals.

Toys are expensive, and not always fully appreciated by the kids in your life. If your kid never cried on Christmas, you’re one of the lucky ones. Moms, you know what we’re talking about.

Instead of breaking your budget on expensive toys this Christmas, get like-new and gently used toys from thrift stores. We guarantee your kids won’t know the difference.

The Fashion Cents has a large selection of toys from popular brands like Melissa & Doug, and most of the toys are under $25!

4. Still not sure what to get? Try a gift card.

We hope you’re ready to take on Christmas on a budget this year, but if you’re still not confident in your gift-giving abilities, you can never go wrong with a gift card. Many stores, thrift stores included, offer extra savings on gift cards at this time of year.
