How I Decide Where to Grocery Shop Each Week

Large Shopping Trip Coupons

Lately, several grocery stores have been offering special coupons if you spend $50 at their store. The store that offers the largest value coupon has been my determining factor. Giant circulars have had a save $.30 per gallon coupon if you spend $50 in your shopping trip. That is equivalent to $7.50 off of gas. Ummm, yes, I’ll take a coupon for $7.50! If I’m doing other Giant gas deals, its pretty easy to get to $50.

The other week I received a coupon mailer from Weis featuring their Ephrata Grand Re-Opening. On alternating weeks you can save $8 off your $50 purchase. That’s amazing! And really, it’s not that hard to spend $50 on things I need for a family of 5. And since $8 covers my basic necessities of milk, bread, and eggs, it’s like getting those for FREE.

Store Coupons combined with Manufacturer Coupons

In the Weis coupon mailer that I received, it also had coupons for FREE products every week if I spend $25. This week I received FREE Tropicana Orange Juice, FREE EGO Waffles and $3 off any produce purchase. If you have manufacturer coupons for any of these items, you can use those too, making this a money-maker.

For produce, I often do multiple shopping trips. Specifically because I like using the FREE bananas coupon that Garden of Eden has in the Shopping News almost every week. We love our bananas!

Other Determining Factors

Last week I spent $50 at the Ephrata Weis and received a $6.00 off your next purchase coupon. I had no idea why. They explained to me that for a short time they are generously rewarding customers because of their celebration. Another day I spent about $20 and I got a $3.00 off your next purchase coupon. So this week, I definitely knew I had to do my large shopping trip there. Today, my total was $32 and I got a $5.00 off my next shopping trip! Woohoo!!

Top 10 Favorite Lancaster Birthday Freebies

It’s my birthday month, so its time for my annual birthday freebie posting! I have some new favorites this year.

One tip of advice: Sign up for these birthday clubs at least 1-2 months before or after your birthday. Many of them will also email you special coupons on the anniversary of your account – so right now would be a great time to sign up (since you’ll get anniversary coupons near Valentine’s Day every year!)

10. La Borimex (Ephrata)
They will give you a FREE fried ice cream on your birthday. Be sure to bring your ID!

9. Shady Maple Smorgasboard (East Earl)
Get a FREE buffet if you visit with a paying adult. I had to include this on the list because it is a long-time tradition. We definitely don’t go every year, but when we can, we like to make it a special treat. We often go for breakfast, when it’s cheaper for the paying person. :)

8. Moe’s Southwest Grill (Reading, and Harrisburg)
You can get a FREE Moe’s entree (excludes fajitas) on your birthday with the purchase of a drink. On your anniversary you also get a BOGO entree coupon!

7. Noodles & Company
You’ll receive a FREE bowl of noodles. My favorite is Pad Thai. Yum!

6. Honey Baked Ham
This was a new one for me this year. They sent me a coupon for a FREE Honey Baked Ham Deli sandwich. I never tried this before, but it was delicious!!

5. Ruby Tuesday
This year I got a FREE burger (up to $9). I chose to pay a few cents more and upgrade to a pretzel burger. You can use this for take-out and the not be tempted to order more food or drinks, making it almost completely free!

4. Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream

I didn’t realize that the Lancaster location changed names, but they still accepted my FREE ice cream coupon. We tried the cookie monster ice cream (bright blue ice cream with cookie dough chunks in it). Yum!

3. Esbenshades Greenhouses

This is a nice change up from free food, an Esbenshades FREE plant. Mine was for a free primrose!

2. Dunkin Donuts / Baskin Robins
Get a FREE beverage and a FREE kids size ice cream.

1. Isaac’s Restaurant and Deli
Not only is this a wonderful local place for creative sandwiches, but they have my all-time favorite dessert on their menu! I use this coupon for any dessert for FREE every year, and I talk about it all year long too, just ask my husband! If you haven’t tried it, and especially if you are a cheesecake, brownie, and ice cream lover—you definitely have to sign up for this birthday freebie and get the Toucan Brownie Nest al-a-mode!
