25 Favorite Things You Want to Buy at Glennwood Discount Foods

I shop at a number of different discount grocery stores in Lancaster County in order to keep my grocery budget as low as possible (and also because I love finding deals!) It is amazing how low you can keep your grocery budget just by using discount grocery stores.

One of the stores I love to frequent is Glennwood Foods in Hinkletown, PA. Sometimes people ask me what I love to buy there, so I thought I’d quickly share my 25 favorite things to buy at Glennwood Foods.

1. Frozen Food

I love keeping frozen veggies on hand to serve as sides with our meals. I also love it when I find frozen hash browns to make this simple breakfast casserole! Glennwood also has excellent prices on frozen pizza, which I sometimes like to keep on hand for emergency meals.

2. Spices and Bulk Spices

Spices are always $.99, or you can buy bulk size containers for just $1.99.

3. Discounted Bread

I often find bread and bagels discounted to $.99 or less. I don’t find amazing prices on tortillas usually—I’ll hit up BB’s Discount Grocery for those where they are usually in stock for just $.10.

4. Animal Crackers

5. Trash Bags

All I could find the day I took these pictures was $5.49 for 40 13-gallon Hefty bags, but usually I look for 60-90 trash bags per box somewhere in the $2.49 to $3.00 range. UPDATE >> I was there this week (9/17) and there were 80ct trash bags for $5.69! So just keep looking and watching, and you’ll find a great deal too!

6. Aluminum Baking Pans

These $.59 aluminum baking pans are excellent for taking a family a meal or freezing dinners. I often like to double my recipes —eating the first half and freezing the second half.

7. Plasticware

For just $.79, buying this 48 pack of spoons is cheaper than the Dollar Tree!

8. Baking Items –

Vanilla is usually a pretty good price, and there are some unique finds too, like marshmallow bits. Just in case you wanted to surprise your kids in their snack mix. 😉

9. Cream Soups

I don’t make too many recipes with cream soups, but I do know they are typically expensive in a normal grocery store. I love that Glennwood has them regularly for just $.99.

10. Canned Beans

I find that Giant regularly has canned beans on sale for 2/$1, however $.99 isn’t bad if you’re at Glennwood and don’t want to make any extra shopping trips to other stores.

11. Ice Cream

If you like unique flavors, you’ll find ice cream for about $1 per half gallon—and sometimes regular flavors too. You’ll also find good prices on bulk size containers of ice cream if you’re shopping for a party or big picnic.

12. Ginger-ale

I don’t know about you, but when my family has a sick day, the one thing that usually helps is a little bit of Ginger-ale. I like to keep these small containers on hand so we just have to open a little bit and don’t need to open a large 1 or 2 liter bottle.

13. Normal Staple Items

One thing I like about shopping at Glennwood is you can buy staple items like a gallon of milk. You’ll also find many other things that you might be looking for on a typical shopping trip, like milk, eggs, macaroni and cheese, diapers, or aluminum foil.

14. Toothbrushes

Just 2 for $1!

15. Hot Dogs

I often find hot dogs for $.50-.79. But you’ll always find at least one or two varieties for less than $1 per pack!

16. Specialty Cheeses

Their cheese selection is quite extensive, whether you are looking for swiss, muenster, cheddar, or farmers cheese. You’ll also find very affordable unique cheese like cranberry cheese!

17. Gene Wenger’s Hamloaf

You’ve heard me say this many times, but Gene Wenger’s hamloaf is the absolute best hamloaf you’ll find in Lancaster County. I love that Glennwood always offers a sale on this hamloaf during their anniversary sales. Its a two week sale in the spring and the fall and you can buy a large  8 pound bag. I like to roll mine into balls and freeze them already baked, so I can heat them up quickly for a simple family dinner.

18. Deli Meat

I have not found any other store that offers deli meat consistently for somewhere in the range of $2-4 per pound. I know of many customers who frequent Glennwood just for this reason—buying their deli meat in bulk and freezing it until they can visit again.

19. Fresh Produce

Sometimes the only reason we go to Glennwood is because of their fresh produce. We’ll visit the cold room for carrots and whatever else we’ll find, and then make sure to grab some yams for just $.39/lb! The raspberries pictured here were 2/$1!! Can you believe that huge pack for that price?!

20. Orange Juice

You’ll find orange juice for the best price in the cold room, usually around $1-1.50.

21. Yogurt

Yogurt is also in the cold room, and there is a wide selection typically. You can buy the Pequea Valley Farms homemade yogurt for just $3.99 (I like to use this for yogurt starter if I’m making my own yogurt), or you’ll find cases of discounted individual size yogurts, perfect for packing lunches. (Sometimes the flavors are unique, but sometimes they are normal!) 🙂

22. Annie’s Homegrown snacks.

You’ll also find other snacks and granola bars at great prices if you dig, like these individually bagged granola bars for just $1.

23. Lunchables

This is a very rare purchase for us, but it is a nice surprise for the kids occasionally.

24. Eggs

Before we started our homesteading journey, I almost always bought my eggs at Glennwood because I could always find them for less than $1!

25. Bulk Meats

Like these pork baby back ribs for just $3.49/lb!

You’ll also find some unique Lancaster County items that aren’t necessarily discounted, such as maple syrup, homemade potpie noodles, Kauffman’s jellies and spreads, frozen meadow tea, and even homemade cookie dough that you just pop in the oven!

Glennwood Foods is located in Hinkletown along Route 322. It is about 5 minutes off of Route 222, heading east on Route 322. It is across from La Borimex Mexiacan Restaurant—which is one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants in Lancaster County!
